STATE HOUSE REFUTES CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS INVOLVING PRESIDENT KIKWETE

THE state house (IKULU) yesterday refuted claims posted by Wikileaks more than 48 hours ago that President Jakaya Kikwete was subsidised to buy five pairs of suits and his party given USD 1 million during the 2005 election campaigns.
Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam, the Director of Presidential Communications, Salva Rweyemamu said that during his time (The president) as foreign minister had never been flown to London by anybody on a subsidised shopping expedition.
“Ministers are normally given adequate clothing allowance,” the State House spokesman said.
He said that Wikileaks reports were written by the former US Ambassador to Tanzania, Michael Retzer who said that Kikwete accepted gifts from the owner of Kempinski Hotel chain, Ali Albwardy.
Rweyemamu said the Ambassador also wrote that during his conversation with Manager and Publicity Director of the hotel, Lisa Pile he was told that President Kikwete permitted them to construct two hotels in Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti plains respectively.
“It is disappointing that an Ambassador worth his name could engage in such gossips.
