INVOLVE MEN IN REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ISSUES: CALL

Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children Ms Sophia Simba addressing participants in Dar es Salaam yesterday
THE Minister for Community Development Gender and Children MS Sophia Simba has underscored the need involving young men in reproductive health initiatives and also in gender issues to reduce the number of deaths and sexually transmitted diseases.
She made the call in Dar es Salaam yesterday at the launch of a project on men’s involvement in sexual and reproductive health.
She said a big number of maternal and infant deaths and increasing sexually transmitted diseases today were a result of traditions and customs which made the community believe reproductive health concerned women only.
She said poor involvement of men in reproductive health was the main factor that caused the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) in collaboration with local Partners Resource Oriented Development Initiative and Health Action Promotion Association to establish a project which would educate society members the importance reproductive health.
“Men will be educated to understand the responsibility of raising children is for both parents and will be involved in advocacy so that they can sensitise their fellow men to be involved in reproductive health,” Simba said.
“We believe that if this succeeds it will contribute significantly to reproductive health and gender which will in turn help reduce disease and death incidents.
For his part, Swedish ambassador to Tanzania Lennarth Hjelmaker commended RFSU for its role in improving sexual and reproductive health and rights across the world.
He said in his country it was clear that an effective response to HIV/Aids required also a great focus on openness to reproductive health and rights.
He underlined the importance of focusing on the youth when addressing issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights and HIV/Aids.
Hjelmaker also called for better information and increased knowledge on a growing population of the youth in Tanzania since they were prone to income poverty and diseases
